Setting Up Your First Competitor Tracker in Under 5 Minutes

The single biggest reason people never get value out of keyword gap analysis is that they never actually finish setting it up — they open the tool, get intimidated by all the surrounding options, and close the tab. Here’s the honest version of what setup actually requires, stripped down to the minimum: it’s genuinely a five-minute job.

Step 1: Confirm Your Own Site Is In

Before comparing against anyone else, make sure your own website is set up in the “My site” panel. This is the reference point every competitor comparison runs against, and it’s shown in its own visually distinct, bordered panel with a “You” badge and a domain chip — separate from the competitor list on purpose, so you never confuse your own coverage with someone else’s while reading a report later. If it’s not already populated, this is the first thing to fill in; everything downstream depends on it.

Step 2: Add One Real Competitor

This is the part people overthink. You don’t need a research process to pick “the right” competitor for your first tracker — pick one site you already think about when you’re planning content, one whose blog or resource section you’ve genuinely read before. Type its domain into the inline “track any website” box right on the page. That’s the entire action. There’s no separate form, no approval step, no need to also go find a checkbox afterward — adding the domain there and then automatically switches it on in your active comparison set.

Step 3: Run the Comparison

With your site and at least one competitor set up, the report generates a side-by-side view: keywords you both cover, keywords the competitor covers that you don’t, and vice versa. On a first run, don’t try to absorb everything at once — just confirm the report populated and skim the top of the missing-keywords list to get a feel for what kind of terms show up.

Step 4: Add a Second and Third Competitor

One competitor gives you a data point; a second and third give you a pattern. Repeat the same one-box process — type in the domain, it’s added and auto-enabled — for two more sites you consider relevant. There’s no reason to stop at one beyond the fact that it’s the fastest way to get your first report on the board. Building out to three is still well within the five-minute budget, since each addition is a single action.

Step 5: Do One Pass of Triage

With three competitors tracked, look specifically for keywords that show up as missing against more than one of them — that overlap is your highest-confidence signal that a term genuinely matters in your space, rather than being one competitor’s idiosyncratic choice. Pick three to five of those to start with. You don’t need to process the entire report on day one; the point of this exercise is to get from zero to “here’s what to write next” as fast as possible, not to achieve total keyword coverage in one sitting.

What Not to Do on Day One

  • Don’t try to add every competitor you can think of before running your first report — three is plenty to start.
  • Don’t try to read every row of the report on the first pass — scan for overlap and relevance, then stop.
  • Don’t second-guess whether you picked the “perfect” competitors — you can add or remove trackers later without losing any of your own site’s history.
  • Don’t skip setting up your own site first — without it, there’s nothing to compare against.

What Happens After Setup

Once your tracker set exists, it keeps working in the background between visits — competitor coverage shifts as they publish new content, and your own “already handled” keywords stay marked even as the live comparison changes underneath them. That means the five minutes you spend today isn’t a one-off task you’ll need to repeat from scratch; it’s the foundation for a report that keeps getting more useful every time you come back to it, as long as you occasionally revisit and refresh which competitors are in your comparison set.

A Realistic First Week

A sensible cadence for someone brand new to this: set up the tracker today (five minutes), come back in two or three days once the initial comparison has had time to reflect real data, do your first proper triage pass, and pick your first handful of keywords to write. By the end of the first week, you should have gone from an empty gap page to an actual, prioritized shortlist — without ever having spent more than about twenty minutes total on the tool itself. The rest of the time goes to actually writing, which is exactly where it should go.
